So, all those weeks ago when our esteemed videographer William Matthews from Digital Footprint and I started out on this crazy journey to make a movie every monday, I said that we should be brave together. Today, I'm going to put my money where my mouth is: I'm going to graze the topic of education, which is something I always tried to avoid.
I was invited by Heather Payne, a brilliant twenty-something making us all feel like underachievers, to check out an event hosted by Mozilla geared towards getting kids excited and involved in tech and coding. It's a cool concept, and even cooler in execution, and got me thinking about how our education systems evolve.
Now, while I am a bit critical in this video of some investment choices made by governments all over the world in education for technology, this video is not so much about criticism as it is about starting a conversation about priorities. As time's get tougher, and government's have more work to do with less cash, it's important that we all be part of the conversation about how our hard earned tax dollars are spent.
Where should education fall when compared to things like housing, healthcare or transportation? I look at places like Ontario where investment in education has been a clear choice, versus the current battle in Quebec, where the government is choosing other priorities over maintaining current levels of post-secondary funding.
Some look at this as a right/wrong equation, but really, it's only by putting everything on the table that we can have an honest conversation as citizens about what matters most to us. Thus, take today's Movie Monday as a piece of that puzzle.
Enjoy!

this was a great video guys! I feel like you are getting better and better each week. Interesting to think that its Mozilla, Google, Apple etc who are interested in our children's future... interesting and a bit scary. What other areas of education are corporations the frontrunners ... and where else should the government be stepping up to the plate?
Thanks Alex! You raise some good points and questions...and are doing more of that "putting it all on the table" stuff I was getting at! Feel free to share the video widely!
