So, I live near Christie Pits Park in Toronto and have for many years. It's one of these post-War neighbourhoods of modest sized homes, small one way streets, and a neat mix of older people, new families, and young hipsters. The neighbourhood is many things, but until recently it would never have struck me as a dangerous place where a rash of sexual assaults could take place.
But sadly, that's precisely what's been going on. In the past 3 months there have been a dozen assaults in the area. Needless to say, this has made the whole neighbourhood both nervous and angry. In moments like these, one can often feel helpless...which is exactly where I started with all of this. What can I do? How can I make our streets safer?
I decided that adding my voice to the many voices trying to make us face tough questions was important. For me, this has meant breaking down the issue into simpler pieces so that not only myself, but anyone can start to change our culture to make this world better.
Please note, I am not an expert on the topic, nor am I trying to suggest that my ideas and solutions are the only ones, far from it. I'm just a guy with a mom, a girlfriend, and lots of female friends who wants to help be part of the healing that can go on. I encourage you to leave your comments in the space below.
